The confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet, you can step up and down the streets of time, right into the pages of U.S. History.
Since the 1750's, Harpers Ferry has been host to numerous significant events that have 'shaped the course of our nation'. The homes and shops have been restored and preserved into a living National Park, where pedestrians are beckoned in from doorways, and the hungry hiker, having taken on the Appalacian Trail, can sit a spell and get a meal.
Harpers Ferry is one of he only towns the Appalacian Trail passes through, and if that interests you, and you're not afraid of bears [I am!], the ATC Headquarters is also right in town
Directly in and adjacent to the historic landmark that is the town, you may also experience the B&O Potomac River Xing...
St. Peter's Catholic Church, originally erected as a log cabin, courtesy to the Irish Immigrant workers.
That structure soon became a raft claimed by the Shenandoah, and the chapel now standing, and it's cemetery, remains one of the only Historically protected sites on private property, (the Harper family property).
I'd love to go into a thesis on Harpers Ferry for you to skeef , but I really just want to share my pics from the day. This is the sweet spot for a single get-away-day, a lover's stroll, or a writer's block. Don't forget the camera.
So go and have a peaceful day.
Absorb some history.
Play pretend.
I think we went there once as a family, now that I see it. We hiked a few miles on the Appalachian Trail, and then hiked them back. We also took a train through the mountains that brought us back again, too. Fun!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this!
ReplyDeleteI went to a retreat right across the river from there when I was a teenager for a good 3 or 4 years and I remember loving it...I'd love to go back!
ReplyDeleteWe (my mom and I) stopped in, since we literally drive thru there on the way home from our cousin's house in Charles Town WV.
